I found an interview with the Amazon CTO Werner Vogels: Learning from the Amazon technology platform (ACM Queue vol. 4, no. 4 - May 2006). It’s quite interesting as everybody knows Amazon and therefore the problems and challenges he talkes about get understandable.

Here three short citations:

“For us service orientation means encapsulating the data with the business logic that operates on the data, with the only access through a published service interface. No direct database access is allowed from outside the service, and there’s no data sharing among the services.”

“If you hit the Amazon.com gateway page, the application calls more than 100 services to collect data and construct the page for you.”

“Each service has a team associated with it, and that team is completely responsible for the service—from scoping out the functionality, to architecting it, to building it, and operating it.”

Concerning SAP enterprise SOA / ESA, NetWeaver and other SAP products, you can find a lot of information on the internet. One important resource is the SAP Developer Network (SDN), where you can find a lot of articles, forums and blogs to various topics. Another one is the NetWeaver area of the Service Marketplace (customer or partner login required), where there is information on the products, release information and so on.

Also very important is the SAP Help Portal. There you find extensive documentation for the whole product range (sections: mySAP ERP, SAP NetWeaver, mySAP Business Suite, SAP R/3 and R/3 Enterprise, SAP for Industries, SAP xApps, SAP Solution Manager). I was looking a lot at the NetWeaver section, but I got confused by the structure every time. First of all you have different main topics: IT Scenarios at a Glance, Power User’s Guide, Technology Consultant’s Guide, Administrator’s Guide – Technical Operations Manual, Administrator’s Guide – Security Guide, Developer’s Guide and SAP NetWeaver by Key Capability. But when you choose one it does not mean that the topic name is always visible when you dive further in. Example: You choose Developer’s Guide, then Fundamentals, then Creating Composite Applications - what happens? At least I get lost as Creating Composite Applications becomes the top of the tree and I don’t see that I’m in the area of the Developer’s Guide. Furthermore there is no way to get one layer up again. The thing get’s really confusing when subsections of the guides link between each other as you sometimes don’t realize that you are in another area. As all the guides are touching the topics from a different (but sometimes overlapping) view and the navigation structure often is very deep, it’s hard to gather all the possibly important information for one topic together and even after weeks I found new sections I haven’t seen before. So if anyone has recommendations on how to better deal with those help pages I will really appreciate it.

To get a better overview and to have the possibility to jump up a layer after I got lost in a subsection, I created a document with the navigation structure of the SAP NetWeaver 2004s SPS09 guides/documentation. Of course there is not the complete structure in there but at least part of it. In areas related to the Composite Application Framework, Visual Composer etc. you can dive deeper than in others. But at least you get an overview of the whole documentation. I don’t know whether it helps you, at least it helped me a bit (although it did not solve the problem completely).

Seit einiger Zeit sorgt ein bei “Google Video” veröffentlichtes Jongliervideo von Chris Bliss für Furore. Vor allem wahrscheinlich bei Nicht-Jongleuren, aber damit kommen die Jongleure natürlich auch nicht drum rum es anzuschauen. So wurde auch mir vor ein paar Wochen der Link zugeschickt und da ich das Video gerade wieder zufällig in heimo’s blog gesehen habe, eine kurze Übersicht dazu. Die Rede ist vom zum Beatles-Song Golden Slumbers “choreographierte”:) Amazing Juggling Finale. Ein Video in ähnlichem Jonglierstil (aber aus meiner Sicht nicht ganz so passend und weniger abgedreht) ist das Fatboy Slim “That Old Pair Of Jeans” Video - ich kenne das Original-Video von Fatboy Slim nicht, aber den Kommentaren unter digitalshit.de nach zu urteilen ist es sogar das.

Auf die Chriss Bliss Videos gab es dann auch eine Antwort aus der amerikanischen Jonglierszene. Jason Garfield stellte eine 5-Ball-Parodie (Chris Bliss Diss Video) ins Netz und löste damit eine größere Diskussion aus was eigentlich einen guten Jongleur ausmacht. Zusammenfassend kann man vielleicht sagen sein Ansatz ist: Chris Bliss mag ein guter Entertainer sein, aber er ist kein guter Jongleur. Ein guter Jongleur ist seiner Ansicht nach jemand der technisch gut ist, also viele schwere Tricks mit möglichst vielen Objekten sauber und ohne Drops jonglieren kann. Andere sind der Meinung es kommt mehr auf den Stil der Darbietung an (tänzerisch, ausgefallen, lustig …) als auf die technische Sensation. Jason Garfield würde zu so einer tänzerischen 7-Ball-Jongliernummer wahrscheinlich sagen es war ein mittelguter Jongleur kombiniert mit einem guten Tänzer oder zu einer 3-Ball-Schwarzlichtnummer ein schlechter Jongleur mit Leuchteffekt. Ob man eine Persönlichkeit jetzt versucht in seine Einzelheiten zu zerspalten oder sie als Ganzes sieht ist ja eigentlich egal, deshalb möchte ich darauf nicht näher eingehen. Tatsache ist, dass es unterschiedliche Stile von Darbietungen gibt und je nachdem was man lieber mag findet man das eine besser oder das andere - beides kann gut sein und hat seine Berechtigung.

Das Jason Garfield Video ist wahnsinn - man sieht einfach, dass jahreslanges hartes Training dahinter steckt. Allerdings wird das Rumstehen auf immer der gleichen Position und ohne jede Mimik auf die Dauer fast etwas langweilig, vor allem wenn man kurz davor das andere angeschaut hat. Das Besondere beim Chris Bliss Video war für mich einfach, dass dieser Typ völlig abgedreht wirkt - hat also auf jeden Fall seinen Reiz.
Hier noch ein Video-Statement und Bliss Remix von Jason Garfield. Wirkt etwas sehr arrogant, aber jongliertechnisch gesehen hat er sicherlich recht.

Als Dokumentenklasse verwende ich “scrreprt” von KOMA-Script. KOMA-Skript enthält zusätzliche Pakete und Klassen, die für das europäische Umfeld gedacht sind. Die Standardklassen von LaTeX richten sich nach amerikanischen Konventionen und Papierformaten (haben also beispielsweise kein A4, andere Trennrichtlinien etc.). Scrreprt ist einseitig (im Gegensatz zu scrbook) und hat als höchste Gliederungsebene das Chapter (scrartcl geht nur bis section).

Da ich auf Englisch schreibe, aber an einzelnen Stellen auch Deutsch brauche, habe ich folgende Babel-Angabe: \usepackage[ngerman,english]{babel}. Das zuletzt genannte (also Englisch) ist damit voreingestellt. Auf Deutsch umstellen geht durch \selectlanguage{ngerman}. Die Angabe ngerman bedeutet neue deutsche Rechtschreibung - alte Rechtschreibung wäre german. Das A4-Format kommt durch die Angabe \documentclass[a4paper]{scrreprt}.

Ich habe mich dazu entschieden, meine Diplomarbeit mit LaTeX (ein Textsatzprogramm - besonders für lange wissenschaftliche Texte beliebt) zu schreiben, da es mir von vielen empfohlen wurde und mir bei Word auch schon vereinzelte Probleme untergekommen sind, beispielsweise mit Tabellen am Seitenende und ähnlichem. Bei großen Dokumenten (ca. 100 Seiten) kommen angeblich immer mehr Tücken dazu.

Ganz so intuitiv und einfach wie viele immer behaupten war der Einstieg allerdings nicht. Wenn man eine Layout-Vorlage hat, die man eins zu eins übernehmen kann/will sicherlich perfekt: dann macht man sich noch mit einigen Befehlen für das Schreiben der Texte vertraut (Anzeigen von Sonderzeichen, Formatierungen, Trennung, Einbinden von Tabellen/Grafiken, Labels, Referenzierungen, …) und kann loslegen. Ist dies nicht der Fall, muss man sich (egal ob man eine Vorlage verändern will oder gleich eine neu erstellt) auf jeden Fall näher mit einzelnen Paketen und Befehlen auseinandersetzen, was mich durchaus ein paar Tage gekostet hat (aber auch interessant war).

Ich verwende die Distribution MiKTeX, TeXnicCenter als Entwicklungsumgebung und JabRef zur Literaturverwaltung. Erste Aufgabe war den passenden BibTex-Style zu finden. Der Lehrstuhl verlang die sog. Oxford oder Harvard-Zitierweise, dabei werden die Verfassernamen abgekürzt und mit Jahreszahl in eckige Klammern gesetzt - dies sieht beispielsweise so aus: [MeBe01, S. 101]. Eine Freundin hat mir dann dankenswerterweise die entsprechende Datei geschickt. Ich verwende jetzt wisealpha.bst vom Lehrstuhl für Wirtschaftsinformatik an der TU Dresden - das ist eine Überarbeitung des alphadin-Styles, der wiederum auf DIN 1505 basiert. Um die Seitenzahl noch mit dazu zu bekommen, muss man sie im cite-Befehl in eckige Klammern setzen. Im Text sieht eine Quellen-Referenz dann folgendermaßen aus: \cite[p. 101]{Meierl2001}. Meier2001 ist dabei der in JabRef vergebene Bibtexkey.

Auf der Seite des WISE-Lehrstuhls gibt es neben dem BibTeX-Style auch eine Vorlage. Aber ich hätte einige Dinge verändern wollen und die (für mich als Laien) relativ komplexe Vorlage zu verwenden (sie ist für Seminararbeiten, Diplomarbeiten und Doktorarbeiten und definiert zahlreiche eigene Funktionen), war mir dann zu unsicher. Daher habe ich mir selbst mit Hilfe verschiedener Vorlagen und des Buchs “LaTeX-Begleiter” von Goosens, Mittelbach und Samarin eine zusammengestückelt. Ich werde sie vielleicht auch am Ende hier veröffentlichen.

I already mentioned that I’m currently writing my “Diplomarbeit”, a Service-Oriented-Architecture-Oriented-Diplom-Arbeit (SOAODA) to be more precise.
The exact title is “Design and Implementation of a Service-oriented Information System Architecture Based on a Case Study” (Konzeption und Realisierung einer service-orientierten IS-Architektur anhand eines Fallbeispiels). As the Case Study will be based on SAP concepts and NetWeaver technology, the thesis basically divides into four main parts:

• Explanation of vendor-neutral SOA fundamentals.
• SAP’s view on SOA, i.e. enterprise services architecture (ESA) - or enterprise SOA (ESOA) as it is officially called since May.
• Procedure for designing and implementing SOA.
• Designing and Implementing a little scenario - in fact it’s a mini-composite application using web services, guided procedures, visual composer and CAF core.

So the topic is really broad, but as SOA is generally discussed very diverse (starting from a business concept to pure technology) it was most interesting for me to get an overview and not to focus too much on one certain aspect. Of course their are tons of information currently flying around and it is hard to filter because every IT-oriented author, magazine and company seems to have something to say about but explanations/promises are often vague and terms are differently used and defined. University studies on SOA and related topics, however, are still quite rare.

Already today I’m curious to see my list of abbreviations at the end (SOA, SOE, SOAD, ESOA, ESA, ESB, EAI, ERP, SAP, CAF, ……….).

I read that standardization of semantics (for example business objects and services) is helpful for achiving a valuable SOA. What about standardization of semantics for all those SOA-related terms?? At least for me THIS would be helpful. As it seems today, probably nobody can be assured that two people talking about SOA or an ESB are actually talking about the same.

I opened two categories - one called SOA and the other one SAP enterprise SOA. The first one is for SOA in general, the second one may contain more SAP related information.
