I used Akismet for spam protection so far and it worked well in the way that all spam comments were filtered and not displayed. But why letting spam come in if it’s also possible to block it already before. So I just installed the Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin and the Trackback Validator Plugin proposed at Basic Thinking. It sounds reasonable to me, that even in case some spammers may resolve the calculation, it will at least reduce the amount coming in and Akismet can still handle the rest. If you aren’t able to resolve the calculation, you may of course send me an email instead!

Just a few words on the blog theme: I use the vSlider 2.1 theme from Rui Pereira but changed the layout a little bit. The pages are above the header now, the background of the sidebar is adjusted to the page background. Moreover the color of the title bar background is a little bit different and stays nearly the same for opened and closed entries (I didn’t like the shadow effect while closing). Just a short explenation as I mentioned “opened” and “closed”. The theme is called vSlider because you can click on the oval at the right side of the title - be suprised what happens. I don’t know whether one really needs that effect but it was included (for free:), so I won’t ask for now .

To design the header I used African dunes from photocase.de and a green manikin (maybe also from photocase, don’t find it anymore):

What an absurd question right at the beginning. Do you really think weblogs are of any use???

If you do, you’re probably right - at least regarding to the development of the blogosphere as a whole and the possibility to find things you are happy to find in a certain situation.

But with millions of blogs out there, why should especially this one be of interest and find it’s readers? I’m not saying that it will - and I also don’t promise to write continously. But at least it makes no odds to add one more blog to the huge number of already existing ones and we will see how it develops.

I busy myself with the internet and with providing (hopefully useful) information on websites for a long time already, both on rather private sites and exceedingly on the site and forums of the Feki.de club (see link section). And as I know Jan Schmidt personally since his early blogging-days and therefore had a look at his Bamblog from time to time, I was watching the developments in the blogosphere as well as his route to becoming a blogging expert. However, because I did not want to set up a personal internet diary, I saw no real need for a weblog as I’m used to HTML and Dreamweaver and could provide information on normal websites. Yet I like the simpleness of providing content, the combination of structuring by time and category (or even better tags) and the possibility to easily search for the information (having different possibilities to access and find information is always helpful).

So when I started to write my diploma thesis about SOA I decided to have a try with a blog to keep track and comment on useful links and information. As it is a practial thesis and I came across a lot of company internal information in the beginning, I started blogging (gathering links with little comments) on my USB-stick (yes, USB-stick!). With the help of a tutorial it was quite easy to install the server, php, wordpress etc. on the stick and it all worked fine. Nevertheless I did not use it frequently be it because putting in the usb-stick and starting the server is to much of a hassle (it really does not take long!), taking bookmarks or saving the document is faster than writing a blog entry, or the perception that putting in a lot of work and nobody besides myself can benefit from it is not worthwile.

So I now decided to set up a public blog for various topics. As the deadline for my thesis is coming closer, I don’t know how much I will write during the next time but at least I decided for a domain, I installed Wordpress and I’m from now on able to put content in whenever I like wherever I have an internet connection.

Feel free to write me an e-mail or comment on my activity in the blog.

Enjoy reading!
