Reference Model for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA-RM) Approved

October 29, 2006 Print This Post/Page

This week the Reference Model for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA-RM) version 1.0 has officially been announced as OASIS standard by its members (see OASIS News).

The abstract of the reference model states:

This Reference Model for Service Oriented Architecture is an abstract framework for understanding significant entities and relationships between them within a service-oriented environment, and for the development of consistent standards or specifications supporting that environment. It is based on unifying concepts of SOA and may be used by architects developing specific service oriented architectures or in training and explaining SOA.

A reference model is not directly tied to any standards, technologies or other concrete implementation details. It does seek to provide a common semantics that can be used unambiguously across and between different implementations. The relationship between the Reference Model and particular architectures, technologies and other aspects of SOA is illustrated in Figure 1.

While service-orientation may be a popular concept found in a broad variety of applications, this reference model focuses on the field of software architecture. The concepts and relationships described may apply to other ’service’ environments; however, this specification makes no attempt to completely account for use outside of the software domain.

Although it is seen as very abstract and some people doubt the usefulness (cp. Jason Bloomberg, Jeff Schneider), I hope Duane Nickull, the chair of the OASIS SOA-RM Technical Committee, is right in saying that “By providing a clear, singular point of reference, the SOA-RM enables even those with unique ideas about SOA to describe their work in quantifiable terms that can be commonly understood” (see OASIS News). So better an abstract model than no model at all but we will see whether this really changes the confusion surrounding SOA.

Book review: Enterprise SOA - Designing IT for Business Innovation (Woods, Mattern)

October 19, 2006 Print This Post/Page

Woods, D.; Mattern, T.: Enterprise SOA : Designing IT for Business Innovation. First Edition, Sebastopol: O’Reilly, 2006

Enterprise SOA. Designing IT for Business Innovation

Although not published through SAP Press and not visible otherwise from the front cover, one clearly has to state that this is a book which is discussing the SAP view on enterprise SOA / ESA. Dan Woods was already author of the first book about Enterprise Services Architecture published in 2003 (German version 2004: Enterprise Services Architecture). For this new book now he gets support from Thomas Mattern, which is the Solution Marketing Manager for ESA at SAP. This might be a little hint.

Short assessment: If you are already using SAP technology or if you are thinking about using it in the future, this book will give an overview and serve as a good entry point to get informed about new visions, concepts and products at SAP. If you just want to get informed about SOA and already know that you won’t implement your SOA using SAP technology, better keep on searching as large parts of the book are product focused.

Chapters of the book:

  1. ESA in the World of Information Technology
  2. The Business Case for ESA
  3. Evolving Toward ESA
  4. ESA Fundamentals: Learning to Think ESA
  5. The Structure of ESA
  6. The Enterprise Services Community
  7. Creating a Roadmap with the ESA Adoption Program
  8. The Enterprise Services Repository and the Enterprise Services Inventory
  9. Project Mendocino: A Product Based on Consuming Enterprise Services
  10. ESA at Work: Examples from the Field
  11. SAP xApps Composite Applications for Analytics
  12. The Architecture and Development Tools of Composite Applications
  13. Supporting Composite Applications
  14. Web Services Basics
  15. Creating Enterprise Services in ABAP
  16. Creating and Consuming Services in Java
  17. ESA and IT Governance
  18. ESA Life Cycle Management and Operations
  19. ESA Security
  20. Standards and ESA

Do expect:

  • answers to questions you might have
  • practical guidance supported by screenshots and images
  • a business-oriented introduction why enterprise SOA is important
  • to get an overview of SAP visions, applications, tools, consulting services and community initiatives in the context of SOA

Don’t expect:

  • good structuring
  • precise definitions of terms, concepts and technologies
  • academical examination of SOA
  • vendor-neutrality

Book review: Service Orient or Be Doomed! (Bloomberg, Schmelzer)

October 15, 2006 Print This Post/Page

Bloomberg, J.; Schmelzer, R.: Service Orient or Be Doomed! : How Service Orientation Will Change Your Business. First Edition, Hoboken: Wiley, 2006

Service Oriented or Be Doomed!

The exceptional title lets already assume that this book is different from others in the area of service orientation - and yes, it is!

As the authors state, their approach to the topic is that “this is a book about business concepts, where the business concept at hand is how companies can best leverage technology resources to meet their business goals.” They want to talk “about a range of business problems that are preventing companies from being efficient and competitive and then discuss the new approach [they] call Service Orientation to leveraging business resources to solve those problems”. So although there is a lot of technology in the book the approach is different. Whereas typical business/IT books according to Bloomberg and Schmelzer take the approach “Here’s some great technology, now let’s see what we can do with it”, they prefer the way “Here are some difficult business problems, let’s come up with a great way to solve them”. So when talking about IT, they are talking about “a set of business resources available to solve business problems”. The motivation for it is that “Service Orientation and the related technology concept Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) are new approaches for businesses to leverage technology in a flexible, agile manner.” Therefore they want to “free this powerful concept from the clutches of the techies”.

By the way, the difference between “techies” (nerds / geeks / technologists) and “suits” (business people) is discussed very intensively at the beginning, so although the differences for sure exist, after a while I couldn’t here it anymore and got a bit bored. But maybe that’s because considering my studies (Business Informatics) I would classify myself more into those “technology/business crossovers”. So if neither business nor IT is completly new to you and you also heard about service orientation and the evolution of the internet before, you can jump directly into chapter four or five.

Maybe that’s the way business books are written, but (as an academic or a techie:) one has to be aware that not only the title is different from other SOA books I’ve seen before but also the way the content is written. The writing style is rather colloquial and the topics are introduced broadly. “It’s a pretty heavy concept that has far-reaching business implications. To explain it, therefore, let’s step back and tell a tale.” This statement found at the beginning of chapter 5 before explaining the concept of loose coupling, in my opinion is also true for most other parts of the book. So although there is a “Jargon Watch” to shortly clarify important terms which are touched while explaining, the terms which are really important in the context of the book (loose coupling, service orientation, architecture, …) are explained throughout several pages and including many aspects but unfortunately without a short summary or definition at the end. There are only one cost chart, three graphics (showing a “rats’ nest”, SOA view model and the two spheres of service oriented development) as well as one unreadable picture of the Zachman Framework, which in my opinion is not very much in order to back up the message of a whole book. But enough with those formal aspects now, because I really don’t want to say that the style is not good. It’s just important to know what to expect when ordering online.

Because in fact the content of this book is really good. The authors seem to have a lot of experience in the area of service orientation and in my opinion the approach from the business side (or the user side) they take is very important and useful. Not to say that IT-related problems like communication protocols, transaction concepts or security aspects should not be discussed in the SOA context (both sorts of books are needed) but I think its better to have first a clear vision what is best from the business or users perspective before thinking about how to get there by means of technology. Otherwise it can get very narrow-minded as you maybe don’t detect new possibilities at all because the technology might not (yet!) be ready to solve the problems completly in an easy manner.

The book includes the following chapters:

  1. The Business Inflexibility Trap
  2. If You’re in a Hole, the First Thing to Do Is Stop Digging
  3. What Really Happened to eBusiness
  4. What Do You Want Your IT to Do, Anyway?
  5. The Secret Sauce: Loose Coupling
  6. Service Orientation: Light at the End of the Tunnel
  7. Is There an Architect in the House?
  8. How to Think Service Oriented
  9. Okay, So Where Do We Start?
  10. Tackling the Inertia in the Organization
  11. Build Agility with Agility
  12. Becoming a Service-Oriented Enterprise

My advice for this book: Go and get it, it really stands out from other books in the way service orientation is described. I would even say it is useful not just for “suits” but also for “techies” or at least “crossovers”, which want to understand why the managers tell them service orientation is a new approach although they are still coding Java, C# or ABAP. But don’t expect to get fast facts on the different aspects of service orientation. Rather sit down in the evening, open up a beer and listen to the tales the authors have to tell - because what is finally important is that the tales are not fantasy tales but real world tales!

SOA Standardization Efforts

Südostasien (SOA)

October 14, 2006 Print This Post/Page

Book review: ESOA - Concepts, Challenges, Recommendations (McGovern et al.)

October 14, 2006 Print This Post/Page

McGovern, J.; Sims, O.; Jain, A.; Little, M.: Enterprise Service Oriented Architectures : Concepts, Challenges, Recommendations. First Edition, Dordrecht: Springer, 2006

Enterprise Service Oriented Architectures

According to McGovern et al. three major concepts are the basis of enterprise service-oriented architecture (ESOA):

  1. Services using XML-based standards both for specification of the service interfaces and for communication with the services (that’s what they say many refer to as just service-oriented architecture).
  2. Service implementation using component-based software engineering (CBSE) architecture for structuring new applications as well as for legacy wrapping, workflow and business-to-business specifications.
  3. A service-oriented architectural, procedural and organizational mindset, which can merge web service technology and the CBSE approach into a hughely productive whole.

The use of CBSE for service implementation is intensively discussed especially in chapter 3. Following the authers there has been a shift in the evolution of mature CBSE “from reuse of components as pluggable modules of software technology to business-oriented reuse and business collaboration of business services - the components themselves being the service implementations.” They differentiate levels of utility components, entity components and process components. Entity components are business entities such as invoice or customer, They make use of general low-level utility components and are used by process components. The authors refer to that as “federation”, which basically means the same as that higher-level components choreograph those at lower level.

They identify three reasons why, although many commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products exist, implementing an ESOA is difficult:

  1. COTS products are point solutions, not ESOA solutions, that is there exists no single integrated product.
  2. They are general-purpose suitable for many architectural styles, so they are not so high-level as a platform focusing on one architectural style could be.
  3. IT development is (typically) project-based, that means there is little funding outside of the project and there is limited reuse of common artifacts across projects.

As the lack of an end-to-end cohesive product is seen as the major inhibitor limiting productivity they ask for an “enterprise productivity platform” (EPP).

In chapter 3 a procedure for designing service components following CBSE principles is proposed.

They start with a definition of business elements derived from resource and process models. There exist Resource Business Elements (RBE), Service Business Elements (SBE) and Delivery Business Elements (DBE). RBEs consist of a set of resources grouped around focus resources which are real and independent. SBEs are a “collection of immediate steps” grouped by RBEs - they will normally map to organizational units. DBEs are a “group of Service and Resource Business Elements that together deliver a business solution to a business problem, and which provides services to requestors”. They can represent a major responsibilty of a department or a larger organizational unit. So whereas RBEs are useless themselves because there is no process, SBEs need RBEs to have resources. The DBE “is the set of assets that delivers value”.

A Service Business Element is later mapped to a Process Business Component, a Resource Business Element to a Entity Business Component and a Delivery Business Element to an Applicaion Component. Using Model Driven Architecture (MDA) terminology this would mean the business elements are part of the computation-independent model (CIM). They are mapped to components which are later refined and describe the platform-independent model (PIM).

The books consists of further chapters, which I won’t introduce in detail, namely “Orchestration”, “Working with registry and UDDI”, “Understanding Enterprise Security”, “SOA Management”, “Transactions” and “Event-Driven Architecture”. It references other books, documents and magazines in case ideas have already discussed somewhere else (which is not self-evident considering many other SOA books), so it can be said to have a rather academic writing style. Graphics, screenshots and code snippets are used to visualize the statements.

Interview with Shai Agassi about SAP

September 11, 2006 Print This Post/Page

There is a new ZDNet video interview with Shai Agassi, member of the management board and president of PTG (Product and Technology Group) at SAP. Although the written introduction mentions the competition with Oracle the video is not only about this competition. Topics they touch are:

  • What’s the current mySAP customer base in comparison to R/3
  • What is the good thing about Duet (the integration of SAP backend into Microsoft Office)
  • Business Process Platform (BPP) - two parts: the technology platform NetWeaver and the semantic understanding and interfaces
  • SAP Developer Network (SDN)
  • Web Services
  • Industry Value Networks and ES Community
  • Differences between the offer to large, medium and small businesses (NetWeaver as a basis stays but the semantics of enterprise services change, i.e. less complex but not completly different processes for small companies - only a special “dialect” so that integration between large and small businesses along the value chain is still possible)
  • The competition with Oracle (the growth rates were better for Oracle in the last quater but long term comparison is said to be more important)
  • Importance of SOA (decision regarded as important as the decision e-mail or no e-mail)

Service Oriented Architecture at Amazon

September 9, 2006 Print This Post/Page

I found an interview with the Amazon CTO Werner Vogels: Learning from the Amazon technology platform (ACM Queue vol. 4, no. 4 - May 2006). It’s quite interesting as everybody knows Amazon and therefore the problems and challenges he talkes about get understandable.

Here three short citations:

“For us service orientation means encapsulating the data with the business logic that operates on the data, with the only access through a published service interface. No direct database access is allowed from outside the service, and there’s no data sharing among the services.”

“If you hit the Amazon.com gateway page, the application calls more than 100 services to collect data and construct the page for you.”

“Each service has a team associated with it, and that team is completely responsible for the service—from scoping out the functionality, to architecting it, to building it, and operating it.”

Diploma thesis / Diplomarbeit about SOA

September 2, 2006 Print This Post/Page

I already mentioned that I’m currently writing my “Diplomarbeit”, a Service-Oriented-Architecture-Oriented-Diplom-Arbeit (SOAODA) to be more precise.
The exact title is “Design and Implementation of a Service-oriented Information System Architecture Based on a Case Study” (Konzeption und Realisierung einer service-orientierten IS-Architektur anhand eines Fallbeispiels). As the Case Study will be based on SAP concepts and NetWeaver technology, the thesis basically divides into four main parts:

  • Explanation of vendor-neutral SOA fundamentals.
  • SAP’s view on SOA, i.e. enterprise services architecture (ESA) - or enterprise SOA (ESOA) as it is officially called since May.
  • Procedure for designing and implementing SOA.
  • Designing and Implementing a little scenario - in fact it’s a mini-composite application using web services, guided procedures, visual composer and CAF core.

So the topic is really broad, but as SOA is generally discussed very diverse (starting from a business concept to pure technology) it was most interesting for me to get an overview and not to focus too much on one certain aspect. Of course their are tons of information currently flying around and it is hard to filter because every IT-oriented author, magazine and company seems to have something to say about but explanations/promises are often vague and terms are differently used and defined. University studies on SOA and related topics, however, are still quite rare.

Already today I’m curious to see my list of abbreviations at the end (SOA, SOE, SOAD, ESOA, ESA, ESB, EAI, ERP, SAP, CAF, ……….).

I read that standardization of semantics (for example business objects and services) is helpful for achiving a valuable SOA. What about standardization of semantics for all those SOA-related terms?? At least for me THIS would be helpful. As it seems today, probably nobody can be assured that two people talking about SOA or an ESB are actually talking about the same.

I opened two categories - one called SOA and the other one SAP enterprise SOA. The first one is for SOA in general, the second one may contain more SAP related information.

(Anybody interested in my work may leave me a message or send me an e-mail and I will inform him when the thesis is available.)
